06 Jun Brain Frontiers
You know those times when you’re just flipping through the channels and stumble on something really good? Well, I just did. PBS was airing “Brain Frontiers” and it was fantastic.
Neuroplasticity was the common thread between subjects of brain injury, PTSD, and aging. Hope was visible as person after person was shown shifting, changing, emerging from depression and defeat to find a more active, vital life.
What each person stressed was new skills acquisition, having a constant commitment to change. The show brought us US veterans from the Iraq war who were re-learning simple skills of eating with a spoon after having shrapnel puncture their brains.
A guiding principle was” The more you work the brain the more the brain heals itself” simplified into proverbs like, “Use it or lose it” reminiscent of Hebb’s Axiom, “Neurons that fire together, wire together.”
It’s the basis of my June ezine on Gratitude and the upcoming gratitude practice that you can join me in doing. Click here if you want to sign up to be part of the practice.
