Embodied Memories: The Work of Trauma in Art

My cousin – and artist – Kristin Malin sent me the information about the Russian dissident Boris Sveshnikov who is featured in an exhibit at  the Zimmerli Art Museum [Rutgers University.] 

Take a look at the painting above.  I’m struck by Boris Sveshnikov’s image of a leaf less tree emerging from the cold ice.  At the top is the emergence of hope, the movement of a butterfly, bright, fantastic colors against the sky.   I find it moving that someone such as him, stuck in Siberia for years, would offer us, and join with us in this universal longing for transformation. 

 In addition to the exhibit of Boris Sveshnikov’s work there will be a symposium exploring how art provides trauma survivors  a crucial link between the past and the present.
