a colleague of mine was itching to for a more exciting life so she joined the UN.  Yes, she’s a therapist – now working in Southern Sudan.   Her blog opens the door to a completely different world than the one I occupy.

It was time to be trained in how to be safe, UN style.  12 months after arrival I am finally all prepared…  Let me tell you!!

First we organize our convoy. We need drivers and team leaders who will do the radio talking to keep us all briefed.  I’m in car two and quickly volunteer to be the team leader – why in the world would I do that… well simple Dear Watson, the team leader sits in the front seat just in front of the aircon.

It is the hottest ever. +48C/123F. The driver of our vehicle is a young South Sudanese national who does not really speak any English or say anything else than “mhuh”. He does not use any improvised sign language either, or make any effort to try to communicate.  I get irritated because he does not answer at all.
